Welcome to Western Australia

If you are a visitor to Western Australia – welcome! We want you to enjoy your stay, but more importantly we want you to stay safe.

Western Australia is the biggest state in our vast, arid continent, covering an area of 2.5 million square kilometres – that’s bigger than the whole of Western Europe or four times the size of Texas – with a population of slightly more than two million.

Distances between remote townships can be vast and in some cases conditions can be very hot and dry with fuel and food also scarce.

We know the unfamiliar conditions make visitors to our state more vulnerable than locals on our roads. So before you set off on any trip, familiarise yourself with the conditions, road rules and guidelines you need to follow.

In the past, some tourists have looked at maps and thought they could drive to places such as Monkey Mia and back in a day, when it’s at least a three-day trip.

So if you want to stay safe and get the most from your trip to Western Australia, please plan ahead.
