To drive in Western Australia you must hold a current driver's licence from your own country, which covers you to legally drive the type of vehicle, you choose here. You must also carry your licence with you at all times.
If you are visiting for longer than three months you may need to apply for an Australian drivers licence.
Some tourists drive without licences. In some cases it may be to take over the driving from the licensed driver and give them a break. Do not do this. If caught, you face a heavy fine and you will also be in breach of your insurance policy - for the car, for yourself, for passengers and for other road users.
You could also invalidate your travel insurance. Should you have an accident, it could be very expensive.
